After last week's disappointing result against Altofts, Sheffield Wednesday were looking to bounce back against bottom of the league York Devs.
The first half was full of action to say the least, with big chances for either side going amiss. 10 minutes in, Michaela Barrett was played through on goal and seemingly taken down; however, no penalty was given. From the resulting corner, there was a goalmouth scramble which Wednesday somehow not converting to be one up.
York also had their fair share of opportunities and began to really establish themselves in the game and control the momentum. Following a counterattack, they hit the woodwork in the 20th minute and drew out some brilliant saves from Holly Coughlan to keep Wednesday in the game.
After immense pressure, York finally got their goal on the stroke of half-time with a superb finish into the top left corner. New signing and debutant Courtney Kaye almost equalised instantly from a free kick just outside of the box, with the ball striking the inside of the post with a ridiculous effort. York went into the break 1-0 up, leaving Wednesday with plenty of work to do.
The second half was underway, and Wednesday responded in the best way possible, grabbing two quick-fire goals to gain the lead ahead of the rest of the half. The first goal came from the birthday girl, Mika Russell, who Kaye nicely set up, before hitting an effort from distance to equalise. Just three minutes later, Kaye got on the scoresheet on her debut after a free-kick came in from the halfway line. Her original effort was saved before converting the rebound and firing Wednesday into the lead.
Just 2 minutes later, Wednesday almost got a third through Amy Broomhead, who drew a great save from the goalkeeper, after being played through on goal by Coughlan. For the remainder of the half, it was very intense, with York still only trailing by one goal. Both sides had chances to find the net again, with Annie Hall and Broomhead coming close for the Owlesses with 10 minutes to go.
In the dying minutes, Wednesday put on an excellent defensive showcase, nullifying York's desperate attempts to grab a late equaliser, even going to a 4-2-4 formation to try and draw level. The Owlesses saw out the game at 2-1, and put in a brilliant second-half stint to overcome a physical team. The player of the match was shared between debutant Courtney Kaye and young talent Annie Hall, both for changing the game when called from the bench.
That result sees Wednesday remain in 4th and close down the gap to Ilkley in 3rd place. Next weekend, we are on the road as we face Handsworth. Thank you for all the support today!
