Steel City Derby
On Sunday 23rd November 2025, a selection of U9 and U10 girls had the incredible opportunity to be flag bearers for the steel city derby at Hillsborough.
Even though the result didn’t go the Owls’ way, nothing could dampen the excitement of the day. The community organised the day perfectly.
The girls met before kick-off and were welcomed by Courtney, one of the community coaches, before heading off for their briefing. They were buzzing with excitement as they prepared to wave their flags in front of a packed stadium. After watching the players warm up and meeting Barney, the girls were called into position in front of the North Stand, facing the tunnel.
As the teams prepared to walk out, the girls proudly unfurled their flags and waved them with huge smiles. The atmosphere inside Hillsborough was electric – all four sides of the ground were singing, and despite the deafening noise, the girls waved their flags throughout, soaking up every second.
After the players emerged from the tunnel, the girls returned to their seats to watch the game, cheering and clapping right until the final whistle. Regardless of the score, they were still buzzing from the experience.
“It was a fantastic occasion for the girls, and every single one loved it from start to finish. It will live in their memories forever.”
— Jimmy, U9 Coach
Junior Round Up
The U9 girls played their second cup match of the season on Saturday against Hallam Rangers Whites and got off to a flying start. They were excellent throughout, focusing on wing play and delivering dangerous balls into the box that the team capitalised on brilliantly.
Almost every player got on the scoresheet, and the keeper produced several impressive saves. It was the team’s best performance to date — a fantastic all-round display.
The U10s delivered a dominant cup performance, winning 7–1 with fantastic passing, movement, and communication. A confident, fluid display from start to finish — brilliant work from the whole squad.
The U11 Blues played superbly in their cup fixture, running out 11–0 winners. The scoreline allowed the coaches to rotate positions and even give the goalkeeper a run out on pitch. A great team performance with strong attitudes throughout.
A tough match played in freezing conditions by the U11 Whites. The first half was especially difficult playing into the wind, and the girls went in 5–0 down. After half-time the weather eased, and the second half was much more even. The girls scored two excellent team goals, both finished clinically by Eryn.
Huge credit to the players for fighting until the end — both teams were frozen but kept going admirably.
The U12s played 8v9 after the opposition agreed to match numbers and came away with a brilliant 2–1 win. A determined and disciplined display made the victory even sweeter.
Two well-matched sides delivered a superb, competitive game. The U13s had a goalless first half, Beighton took the lead early in the second. Wednesday fought back with resilience and equalised through Ezmae, who latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball and finished with composure.
Outstanding performances across the pitch meant SWLFC were unlucky not to grab a late winner, the team settled for a 1-1 draw. One of the team’s best performances of the season.
Despite dominating the first half and creating numerous chances, the U14 Whites somehow went into half-time 2–0 down with Wheatley scoring from their only opportunities.
The second half continued in the same direction, and perseverance paid off as the girls levelled the match with goals from Beau and Isla. More late chances followed, but excellent goalkeeping from Wheatley meant SWLFC had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Player of the match goes to Alessia who gave an outstanding energetic performance.
A brilliant performance and a thoroughly deserved first win of the season for the U16s. Playing on a quality astro surface allowed the girls to get the ball down and play attractive football.
A cautious first half gave way to confidence once the opening goal went in, and from there the team looked composed and clinical. Fantastic goals, great team play, and a strong away result and a well-deserved 5-1 win.
