SWLFC player spotlight: Beth Ayrton

SWLFC player spotlight: Beth Ayrton

Lewis Railton6 Nov 2024 - 12:00

First Team player Beth Ayrton reflects on her time at Wednesday Ladies since joining, her full-time job away from football and playing in America.

Beth Ayrton made her first impact for the club at the weekend after bagging a goal on her first start against Sheffield United Community Foundation, and she will be hoping to build on that as she faces off against her former side Oughtibridge War Memorial this weekend.

The 24-year-old has become quite the utility player for Andy Gilligan and Gary Wilson's side after the centre-back was pushed up to midfield against Wednesday Ladies' Steel City companions, however her career actually started with her playing in-between the sticks.

After exclusively catching up with Ayrton, she lifted the lid on the early days of her career, which she started at 4-years-old playing as a goalkeeper for Darfield JFC's boys team.

"After Darfield, I joined Barnsley Ladies at 8-years-old, where I stayed until I was 17. I also played at county level for South Yorkshire from ages 14-17.

"I would say South Yorkshire had the biggest impact on my footballing career as it gave me the opportunity to play against teams across the country and was the reason I was able to play in America too."

Ayrton endured a short spell across the pond, playing for Charlotte United in North Carolina until moving back to the familiar territory of South Yorkshire.

"I also played for Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) during my college and university studies.

"When I moved back to the UK, I joined Penistone Church Women for a few seasons before returning to Barnsley Ladies last season where we were promoted to Tier 4.

"Away from football, I work in the NHS as a Care Coordinator and I have a BSc honours degree in Physical Activity, Healths and Exercise. I am also a qualified Sports Massage Therapist."

Injuries hampered the twilight days of her 2023/24 season, and her return to football has seen Ayrton take a chance on a move to the Jubilee with Wednesday Ladies.

"I decided to join SWLFC following an injury I sustained at the end of last season, I am rebuilding my confidence and this team welcomed me in from day one. I’m eager to see what the rest of the season brings with the girls and coaches as they are a great bunch.

"My favourite moment for the club is scoring in the Steel City derby last weekend, and I can't wait to create more memories."

Ayrton and Wednesday Ladies will be in action this Sunday at Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club for a 2pm kick-off. Entry is FREE for the game; we hope to see as many of you there as possible showing your support!
