Sheffield Wednesday Ladies return to action this weekend against Ilkley, looking to build on last week's strong 4-1 away victory over York. This result propelled them up to 4th in the table and showcased promise, with a new formation working well.
Coach Andy Gilligan was pleased with how quickly the players adapted to the changes:
"Considering it was our first go at the new formation, we settled relatively quickly and other than a spell in the first half, we looked well-suited."
While the result has lifted spirits and got Wednesday back on track to winning ways, Gilligan remains grounded about the team’s approach:
“I think it’s about taking it one game at a time. It might be that we start to have more than one solution to take games to opposing teams. We’re happy with the change so far, but we'll get another clue about its suitability after the weekend’s game.”
Last weekend also saw impressive contributions from newly signed Laura Ferguson and Chloe Harrison, both slotting in seamlessly and delivering standout performances. Gilligan praised the pair:
“We've played against Laura and Chloe a few times, and they've always shown their qualities, so there was no surprise with how they played. I was so pleased with them both"
"Obviously, Laura takes the plaudits with the two goals, but Chloe slipped into both the midfield and defensive roles effortlessly.”
Last time the two sides met, Wednesday came out on top with an impressive 4–2 away victory. However, Ilkley arrive this weekend with momentum and strong form following a 2–1 win over previously unbeaten Handsworth.
Gilligan is under no illusions about the challenge ahead:
“We could see when we last played them that they're a quality side. They've now had a chance to find their feet at this level, and the results are starting to show that. To beat Handsworth in the last game shows we're going to have to be at our best again if we're to get a positive result on Sunday.”
Ilkley sit 6th and know a victory could lift them above Wednesday - but the Owlesses will aim to ensure that opportunity doesn’t materialise.
Kick-off scheduled for 2:30pm this Sunday at Jubilee Sports and Social Club. Hope to see you there.
