Sheffield Wednesday Ladies proceed to final eight of the SHWGL Shield after big victory

Jack Shackleton4 Feb - 12:16

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies Reserves beat Edenthorpe JFC Ladies 0-9 to get into the quarter-finals of the Shield.

After a slow start in their last game Wednesday Ladies wanted to inflict the first wounds on today’s opponents. They took the lead just three minutes into the game after Caitlan Norcliffe put the ball into a dangerous area for Mika Russell to head it past the oncoming keeper.

It didn’t take Wednesday Ladies long to double their lead as once again Russell saw her shot hit the back of the net after a deflection wrong footed the Edenthorpe goalkeeper.

Russell completed her hat-trick in the 18th minute when she scored directly from an in-swinging corner giving Wednesday a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The day got even better for the Owlesses and Mika Russell as she managed to score yet another goal from just inside her own half after a long ball bounced over the keeper and Michaela Barrett let the ball past her to go into the net.

Wednesday managed to get one more before half-time. Jess Stewart threw the ball into the box for Ellie McHugh to flick the ball into the far corner as Wednesday then went into half time 5-0 up.

The Owlesses started the second half just as strong as the first as they managed to get a sixth goal. Stewart took a corner kick then ended up hitting the far post and rebounding back to Elise Young who smashed the ball past the keeper.

Another goal fell Wednesday way in the 55th minute after a pass from Young found Barrett who was met by the oncoming keeper leading the ball to fall to Jess Simeson who calmly put the ball into the net.

Wednesday then got the 8th goal which was scored by Barrett after Niamh Davies dribbled the ball past two players then played the ball over the top who rounded the goalkeeper to tap into the open net.

The 9th goal was the last for Wednesday as Barrett got her second goal of the game. She once again was found by a ball over top from McHugh who seemed to do the same thing as Davies. Michaela tapped the ball past the keeper who met her at the edge of the box and tapped it in the net.

Elise Young was given the Player Of The Match for her outstanding midfield performance.

Wednesday Ladies Reserves next game is against Barnsley FC Development on the 9th February.
