Andy Gilligan’s side lined up with a change in-between the sticks, with Skye Webster coming in for the unavailable Kirsty Tonner. Romy Lee, Molly Crossland and Nicole Shaw also dropped to the bench in place of Jess Birtles, Eleanor Vessey, Beth Ayrton and Abbie Hastie.

The Owlesses started as a tight and compact unit, utilising a back five effectively, but Sheffield United got their noses in front on the 10th minute, courtesy of Chloe Salisbury who slid it past Webster to give the Blades the lead.

Sheffield United continued to maintain possession, with the Owlesses defending against the pressure. It was the visitors that got yet another chance, this time to double the lead, but Webster stood strong and denied Blades forward Issy Stewart.

A third chance fell for the Blades 25 minutes in, this time through Liv Edwards, but the attacker, when through on goal, skied over Webster’s net.

Wednesday Ladies had their first effort on goal 30 minutes into the derby, as Rachel Norsworthy found space down the right flank. The Owlesses winger struck an effort from 20-yards-out arrowing straight into the top right corner, but Blades shot-stopper Amelia Lydiatt was equal to it with a top save.

After a bright stint, the Owlesses were unfortunate to go two behind, with Edwards bagging a goal after a scramble in the box, which meant that the attacker was able to bundle it into a vacant net.

Wednesday Ladies went into half-time two goals behind, but still put in a solid showing against top-level opposition.

Gilligan made no changes at half-time, with the Owlesses restarting in a similar to the first half.

Sheffield United extended their lead early into the second stanza, this time through half-time substitute Isla Phillips, who sprung onto a loose ball, beating Webster to it by half a second.

Halfway into the second half, Sheffield United attained a four-goal cushion through Ruby Watts, who bent an effort into Webster far right and out of the reach of the Owlesses goalkeeper.

Sheffield United then notched a fifth through Edwards for a brace, who sent a header past Webster from a corner.

The sixth for the Blades was bagged by Edwards who got on the end of a ball inside the box to prod it in to claim her hat-trick.

Seventh and finally for Sheffield United, Phillips bagged another to round off a 7-0 win.

We will be back in action in four weeks time at the SWFCCP Jubilee Sports Club, where we are set to face Kiveton Park.
