The season drew to a close yesterday, but that didn't stop both sides delivering an entertaining spectacle for fans at Jubilee Sports and Social Club.
There was a lot to play for today, with Wednesday able to finish their campaign in 6th place, and Modernians still having an outside chance at the title, with this fixture being their game in hand on teams around them.
Wednesday were hoping to continue momentum after a comfortable 8-3 win against Kiveton last time out, and Modernians will be wanting to return to winning ways after a 4-4 draw with Altofts in their previous game.
Maisie Gilligan made her return to the starting XI ahead of Romy Lee, whilst reserve player Michaela Barrett got her first Owlesses start after her impressive display last week, scoring a brace. Molly Crossland dropped to the bench for the game today, joined by the returning Rachel Norsworthy. Kirsty Tonner was also on the bench, for her final game in Wednesday colours, after 2 years at the club.
The first half was not short of drama, with Modernians flying out the gates, putting themselves 2-0 up after 30 minutes, arguably against the run of play, knowing that 3 points would keep them in contention for the title.
However, Wednesday managed to battle back and keep their heads up, staging an incredible first-half comeback. Nicole Shaw got the ball rolling, reducing the deficit, before Amy Broomhead levelled the game with an excellent finish just 3 minutes later. Shaw then got her second of the game, 3 minutes after Broomhead's equaliser, completely flipping the game around. Kirsty Tonner came on in the 40th minute for her final appearance, replacing Webster in goal, as the Owlesses led 3-2 going into half-time.
The second half was underway, and Modernians immediately putting pressure on, attempting to keep their title hopes alive and get back into the game. They got their reward in the 51st minute through Megan Sykes after Tonner's save parried to her feet. They continued their spell of pressure for another 10 minutes or so, creating dangerous chances for the Wednesday backline to deal with.
Wednesday then got into a groove, and got a foothold back on the game, putting more pressure on as the second half prolonged, demanding more from tiring Modernians defenders. Both sides had opportunities to win the game towards the end of the game, with Wednesday going the closest, just being unable to convert crucially.
In the 85th minute, Kirsty Tonner came off to ceremonious applause from both sets of players, coaches and spectators to thank her for her services to the club for the past 2 years.
The game finished 3-3 at Jubilee Sports and Social Club and Wednesday ended the season in an impressive manner. A brilliant draw against a top team, and an all-round great performance for Tonner's final appearance.
Despite a strong end to the season, Wednesday do finish this NERWFL campaign in 8th, just falling shy of the 6th place finish that was potentially on the cards, but still a season for the girls to be proud of.
Modernians title chances were foiled today by a resilient Wednesday side, yet they still sit in 4th place and can still potentially finish 3rd.
Ahead of next year, the Owlesses will have elements of their game to improve on and hopefully better their 8th place finish this year. Thank you for all your support this season, home and away, and we hope to see you next season!
