After countless postponements, Wednesday Ladies returned to action at home to face Altofts. It was a disappointing outing this afternoon, with the away side getting the better of the Owlesses.
It was a classic tale of two halves, with Wednesday beginning the first half on the front foot. In the 14th minute, Mika Russell got a hold of a loose ball in midfield, playing Amy Broomhead through on goal, which drew a superb save from the Altofts keeper. Just 10 minutes after the deadlock was broken, with a spectacular team goal, starting from clever build-up play from the back from Imogen Yeardley and Holly Coughlan. Yeardley picked out Broomhead, who played Michaela Barrett through on goal, who cleanly converted into the bottom right corner to put us 1-0 up.
Right on the stroke of half-time, Altofts drew level with their first real opportunity of the game, making us pay for the chances we failed to convert. The equaliser came from a corner, met by a clever header that found the bottom corner.
The game began to drift away from Wednesday after the break, as Altofts won the key duels and controlled possession. In the 60th minute, they took the lead through a sharp counterattack. Although the initial effort was cleared, the ball dropped to an attacker on the edge of the box, who made no mistake.
The game became a back-and-forth affair, with Wednesday almost responding immediately, with captain Eleanor Vessey breaking through the backline and playing a ball across the face of the goal, but no one was there to convert.
However, just minutes later, Altofts took advantage of the cagey nature of the game and extended their advantage, after the rebound from a long shot fell kindly to the striker, dampening Wednesday's spirits. Just 2 minutes later, things went from bad to worse as the away side went 4-1 up, after a goalmouth scramble was cleared yet again into the path of an Altofts player.
Overall, it was a day to forget and one to move past. Wednesday remains in 4th place in the NERWFL ahead of next weekend's home clash against York.
