Owlesses end 2025 with a commanding win

Charles Garrett14 Dec 2025 - 18:20

Sheffield Wednesday breezed past close rivals Farsley in a 4-1 win.

After a few frustrating weeks, there was still hope that Sheffield Wednesday could stop the inconsistency and do the double over Farsley in the league this year. They have beaten us in the cup this year and sat just above us in the league prior to this game, so there was still work to do in order to end the year with a win.

Wednesday started the game brightly, winning every second ball and immediately putting the Farsley defence under pressure. The breakthrough came early, in the 11th minute, when Eleanor Vessey produced a superb through ball to send Amy Broomhead clean through on goal. Broomhead made no mistake, calmly finishing to give Wednesday a deserved 1-0 lead.

The advantage was doubled just eight minutes later. A corner was only partially cleared to Jodie Stancill, who once again picked out Broomhead. Showing great pace, she beat the goalkeeper, rounded her, and neatly slotted home to claim her second of the afternoon and put Wednesday firmly in control. Farsley grew into the game slightly, but it was Wednesday through Abbie Hastie who went closest in the remainder of the half, just dragging her shot wide. Wednesday led 2-0 at the break.

The second half got off to a disastrous start for Wednesday, as Farsley pulled a goal back in the 47th minute with a stunning strike from distance that flew into the top corner. Despite the setback, Wednesday kept their composure and quickly restored their two-goal advantage just seven minutes later.

Goalkeeper Holly Coughlan started the move with a long clearance over the Farsley defence, allowing Nicole Shaw and Amy Broomhead to combine brilliantly with a series of dynamic one-twos. Broomhead showed great awareness to pull the ball back for Shaw, who slammed home into an empty net to make it 3-1.

The game then became a scrappy affair, with clear-cut chances few and far between until the final ten minutes. Coughlan was called into action in the 82nd minute, making a great save, aided by Rebekah Pratley, whose perfectly timed sliding tackle took the sting out of the shot.

Just moments later at the other end, Wednesday almost sealed the result. Broomhead, searching for her hat-trick, found space in the box but could only lift her effort just over the crossbar.

Broomhead eventually got her hat-trick in the 90th minute after combining with Shaw, who beat her marker down the right, before drilling in a low ball and allowing for a tap in to seal the game and put Wednesday 4-1 up.

A brilliant win against a decent side, who we have traded results against this season. We climb to 4th in the NERWFL and will stay there going into Christmas. MOTM was shared between Broomhead for her hat-trick and Vessey for a stellar performance all round. We are next in action on the 4th January against Rossington. Thank you for all the support this year!

XI: Coughlan; Pratley, Lee, Birtles; Vessey, Hastie, Yeardley, Stancill, Norsworthy; Shaw, Broomhead. Subs: Rose, Barrett, Clayton.
