Owlesses edge out Farsley in seven goal thriller

Owlesses edge out Farsley in seven goal thriller

Charles Garrett13 Oct - 12:00

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies battled hard in a closely-contested 4-3 away win against Farsley.

After victory at home against Millmoor last weekend, Wednesday Ladies were looking to extend their winning streak to three games. They faced Farsley away, who had also started the season well, sitting in 3rd ahead of this fixture.

It was a classic game of two halves, with Wednesday in complete control before the break. It took only five minutes to break the deadlock, with a very well-worked goal. Midfielder Abbie Hastie triggered the press well and worked the ball forward to tee up Amy Broomhead for a tidy outside-of-the-foot finish. Just minutes later, Broomhead this time, led the press, forcing the Farsley backline to give away the ball cheaply. It fell to in-form Nicole Shaw, who slotted cleanly to put Wednesday 2-0 up.

On the half-hour mark, Emily Clayton netted her first league goal of the season, finishing from close range after a superb run and low delivery from full-back Rebekah Pratley, giving the Owlesses a commanding three-goal lead. Farsley managed to grab a goal against the run of play, albeit questionably, after Wednesday believed they should've had a foul. Shaw grabbed her brace on the stroke of half-time, with another superb finish. She made a great read of a loose ball and let fly from distance, looping over the Farsley keeper and giving Wednesday a 4-1 lead at half-time.

The home team spent a long time in the dressing room and emerged as a revitalized side. They made multiple substitutions, which flipped the game completely on its head and put Wednesday on the back foot. Farsley pulled a goal back at the start of the half and kept us pinned back for the majority of the half. Their persistence paid off as they clawed the score line back to 4-3 with 25 minutes to go. Resilient defending and a standout goalkeeping performance from Chloe Rose ensured the Owlesses held on.

Despite a challenging second half, Wednesday Ladies dug deep and secured a hard-earned victory. Goals from Broomhead, Clayton, and a brace from Shaw were enough to secure the three points. The Owlesses can take confidence from their collective first-half performance and composure shown later on in the game to see out the result. That makes it three wins in succession and maintains 2nd place in the NERWFL. Player of the Match was awarded to goal-keeper Chloe Rose, whose performance was instrumental in securing the win.

Next time out, Sheffield Wednesday take on Handsworth in the cup.

Starting XI: Rose; Gilligan, Yeardley, Birtles, Pratley; Colford, Crossland, Hastie; Shaw, Norsworthy, Broomhead. Subs: Vessey, Russell, Clayton.
