MATCH REPORT | WEDNESDAY 2-1 YORK CITY LADIES DEVELOPMENT

Julie Higgins

Wednesday got back to winning ways against York City Ladies Development over the weekend.

With the Owlesses coming off the back of a disappointing loss to Evolution Ladies last week, which ended their unbeaten run, the side looked to get their great start to the season back on track against York Ladies at home.

The game started fast for Wednesday, with them landing the first blow in the 2nd minute through Amy Broomhead. The goal came from a through ball which Broomhead ran onto before neatly placing it into the past the goalkeeper.

Following this, the sides looked to be evenly matched, with York having some chances of their own. Coughlan pulled out some impressive saves to keep Wednesday in front.

The Owlesses then had a close call in the 19th minute, with their striker finding herself through on goal, but her shot hit the post. This didn’t end the danger, though, as the rebounded ball found its way to the feet of another York player, whose shot went out for a goal kick.

It wasn’t long, however, before the opposition equalised, with their goal coming in the 20th minute following a mix-up in the Owlsesses’ box, resulting in their striker firing the ball home.

This goal seemed to spur on the ladies, who had been under a bit of pressure, with the side having a couple more chances of their own. However, it was in the 31st minute when Wednesday retook the lead through another exceptional piece of magic from Amy Broomhead. Seeing the keeper off her line, Broomhead decided to take the shot from the just in front of the halfway line, sending the ball flying through the air and into the back of the net.

The sides then became trapped in a stalemate, with both having their fair share of chances, but neither managing to put the ball in the back of the net, resulting in half-time arriving with the Owls still ahead.

The second half started much as the first had ended, with both sides looking evenly matched and having their own set of chances. It was Coughlan who was stealing the show for the Owls, though, pulling out a series of impressive saves to keep the team ahead.

With time running out for York, the Owls looked to shut up shop around the 75th minute to hold on to their narrow lead. This resulted in York being unable to create any more clear-cut chances.

With time ticking down, the Owls had a few more chances of their own, with the first coming in the 87th minute through an effort from outside the box by Gregory that just drifted wide. The second came in the 90+3rd minute, with a headed effort from Kaye that was saved by the York keeper.

With this, the referee blew the whistle for full-time, delivering the Owls another home win and getting their great start to the season back on track.
