Despite travelling with a depleted squad due to injuries and first-team FA Cup call-ups, Wednesday produced a determined and well-organised display to secure a second successive clean sheet and head into the new campaign on a high.

The Owls took time to settle into proceedings during the opening stages, but gradually began to find their rhythm and impose themselves on the contest.

The breakthrough arrived when a Buxton clearance dropped kindly to Kiera Clarke around 20 yards from goal. Clarke showed excellent composure, taking full advantage of the opportunity to fire Wednesday into the lead.

Wednesday continued to grow in confidence and soon doubled their advantage. An excellent delivery from Bamford caused problems inside the Buxton penalty area, with Harrison-Devereux reacting quickest to turn and finish to give the visitors a two-goal cushion.

The Owls emerged for the second half with renewed intensity and immediately put the hosts under pressure.

Some excellent build-up play opened up the Buxton defence and created an opportunity for Harrison-Devereux, who calmly side-footed her effort in off the post to claim her second of the afternoon and extend Wednesday’s advantage.

Despite having limited options from the bench, Wednesday continued to work tirelessly and search for further opportunities.

Their efforts were rewarded late on when another superb corner from Bamford was met by Young, who finished confidently to make it four and put the result beyond doubt.

Buxton responded with a spell of pressure during the closing stages, but Wednesday remained resolute. The back three, supported by a composed performance from the goalkeeper, stood firm to preserve another clean sheet.

The result secured a second consecutive shutout for the Reserves and brought an encouraging pre-season campaign to a close ahead of the start of competitive action.

Following the game, the manager praised the character and fitness shown by the squad in challenging circumstances.

“It was a fantastic performance from the girls, especially considering the limited numbers we had available. We travelled with just one substitute, who was a goalkeeper, which made it an extremely challenging afternoon — particularly in the heat.

“But, just as we showed in our previous game, the team looked sharp, fit and well organised. There were plenty of positives to take from the performance and we’re looking in excellent shape heading into the start of the season.”
