Match preview: Sheffield Wednesday take on league leaders

Charles Garrett30 Jan - 19:25

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies hit the road to take on Leeds Modernians.

The Owlesses return to action this weekend following yet another postponement, as they travel to face league leaders Leeds Modernians in a key clash at the top of the table.

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit in 3rd place, a position coach Andy Gilligan believes reflects the progress made this season:

"The aim at the start of the season was to see progress on last season, and I think the fact we sit where we currently do shows we've done that."

"I still think we've let a few points get away from us this season and could be even better placed, but there's still plenty of the season to go, and we have to keep striving to finish as high as we possibly can."

However, we face a tough fixture against the undefeated league pace setters, whom Gilligan believes will provide a stern test:

"Leeds Mods will be a really tough challenge. They're a physically strong side, who play nice football, but can go direct with 2 pacey forwards. They're the league's pace setters for a reason, and as such, it's the usual mantra of knowing we'll have to dig deep, work hard, stick together and trust in what we do to make them work hard for any points."

It has been a frustrating period for the Owlesses in recent weeks, with poor weather causing a number of postponements and disrupting the team’s rhythm, Gilligan commented:

"This is always the toughest time of the year. Unfortunately, the fixture list seems to have piled all our matches against teams with grass pitches into this period."

"We're not alone, though, with Leeds not having played for a long time either, so it's a very disjointed start to the new year. Hopefully, the worst of the weather will be behind us soon, and we can get back to playing regularly and regain the momentum we had before the Christmas break."

Kick off is set for 2:30 pm at Rastrick High School, HD6 3XB.
