Match preview: Sheffield Wednesday host Altofts

Charles Garrett12 Feb - 20:15

The Owlesses return to action, with the weekend's fixture being our dedicated Football v Homophobia match, in collaboration with Rainbow Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday return to the Jubilee after consecutive weeks on the road, with attention turning to Altofts as we look to continue building momentum in the closing stages of the season.

We come into the fixture sitting in 4th, with our opponents being sat in 7th. We have not yet faced Altofts this season, with coach Andy Gilligan being aware of the danger of the unknown:

"We had mixed results against Altofts last season, so not sure exactly what to expect. On top of that, it feels ages since we last played them, but I do have some memory of them having a strong midfield, so we know we'll have to win the battle first, before we can hopefully implement our game plan"

Gilligan has been encouraged by the quality displayed in recent weeks, particularly in the difficult fixture against Leeds Mods:

"I actually thought that when we got the ball down and played with confidence and quick 1 or 2 touch, we played some really good stuff."

"Some of the best moves on Sunday were created by ourselves, so the confidence we will have gained from knowing we can do that against a side as good as Leeds will encourage the girls to keep playing that way."

There have also been positive signs off the pitch, with competition for places in the squad increasing as the season progresses:

"The mood is really good in camp. I've noticed a bit of a change across the group and a real resolve to get the most out of what we've got left in this season. We've also had a couple of potential signings trying out, which always gives everyone a boost."

With growing confidence and expectation, we'll be looking to take that momentum into what seems to be a competitive test against Altofts.

Kick off is set for 3pm at the Jubes, hope to see you there!
