Match preview: Owlesses target strong response on home turf

Charles Garrett20 Feb - 21:00

Wednesday look to turn frustration into three points as York visit the Jubes.

The Owlesses are back at the Jubilee this weekend as they host York, determined to bounce back from a disappointing result and reinforce their place at the top half of the table.

Wednesday remain 4th in the table, while York arrive bottom of the league. Despite the contrast in league positions, there is a clear understanding within the camp that focus and intensity must remain high from the outset. After last Sunday’s disappointment, the squad are eager to respond, says Andy Gilligan:

"Looking forward to getting back on the pitch and washing last Sunday's 2nd half out of our system. I think we were all frustrated by how the game turned out last week, because I thought we bossed the 1st half and the 2nd half kind of came out of nowhere."

Last time the sides met, Wednesday came out on top 4-1 away from home. However, there is no danger of taking the visitors lightly, with Gilligan saying lessons have already been learned this season about standards dropping against sides previously beaten.

"I think it's all about avoiding complacency when you play a team you've already had a good result against. We've seen what can happen already with the return game against Ilkley, so we have to be on our mettle from the get-go."

While the run since the extended Christmas break has not produced the results the group would have hoped for, morale remains strong:

"You learn more from defeats than victories, and there was a lot of learning taken away from last week's game, for ALL of us."

"We've not had the best of runs since the extended Christmas break, but what is nice is that the mood hasn't dropped in the camp and everyone is as determined to see the end of it as soon as we can."

With renewed focus and home advantage, the Owlesses will be aiming to deliver a composed performance and secure a valuable three points.

Kick-off is set for 2 pm at the Jubilee - come down and get behind the girls.
