Match preview: Andy Gilligan eyes up cup clash

Match preview: Andy Gilligan eyes up cup clash

Charles Garrett17 Oct - 11:00

This week, Sheffield Wednesday Ladies take on Handsworth in the SHCFA Women's Senior Cup Competition.

After another impressive victory on the road last week at Farsley, the Owlesses return to action, this time in cup competition - facing a familiar opponent in Handsworth. The visitors got the better of us on opening day, handing the Owlesses a tough defeat, but Andy Gilligan knows this tie offers a chance for progress.

"Revenge isn't on the agenda; it's more about proving that we're better than the last result against Handsworth a few weeks ago. It's our only defeat in 90 minutes this season, and we didn't feel we did ourselves justice."

"It's great we get a chance to put that right so soon after our last meeting."

Last weekend's win makes it three on the bounce, after successive wins over Ilkley, Millmoor, and Farsley. Gilligan credited the side's effort and resilience in hard-fought games.

"The simple answer is hard work. Without that, we would never have got over the line last weekend against Farsley. I think in spells of every game we've looked really good, but during the spells when the opposition are on top, we've relied on our hard work and fitness to see us through."

There's a real sense of momentum and confidence in the camp as the schedule picks up:

"The girls are great and eager to keep playing and improving. I get the feeling that the games can't come fast enough at the minute."

The kick-off is set for 2pm at Jubilee Sports Park and Social Club. Hope to see you there.
