MATCH PREVIEW | Chesterfield Community Trust Women v SWLFC

Julie Higgins

In the preliminary round of the Adobe Women’s F.A Cup, our ladies mark their first competitive fixture of the 2026/27 season.

Sheffield Wednesday Ladies begin their Adobe Women’s FA Cup campaign on Sunday 23 August, travelling to face Chesterfield Community Trust Women in the Preliminary Round.

The tie will take place at Clay Cross Active, with kick-off scheduled for 2:00pm and admission free for all supporters.

Sunday’s cup clash marks Wednesday’s first competitive fixture of the 2026/27 campaign, ahead of the start of the new NERWFL Southern Division season.

A place in the First Round Qualifying awaits the winners, with an away tie against either North Ferriby or AFC Tickton next up in the competition.

Wednesday will be looking to build on last season’s FA Cup campaign, which came to an end in dramatic fashion at the Second Round Qualifying stage. The Owls drew 3-3 away at Ossett before eventually falling to a 4-3 defeat on penalties.

The club’s best run in recent years came during the 2017/18 campaign, when Wednesday reached the First Round Proper in a season that also saw the side finish runners-up and secure promotion to the NERWFL Premier Division.

Pre-season preparations

Keiron Lee’s side head into Sunday’s tie unbeaten across their last two pre-season outings following encouraging performances against Altofts and Brodsworth Welfare.

Wednesday secured a 4-3 victory away at Altofts, with summer signing Eve Bennett earning Player of the Match honours. Lee also used the fixture as an opportunity to hand minutes to two members of the reserve squad.

That was followed by a 1-1 draw away at Brodsworth Welfare last weekend, where a side featuring a blend of first-team and reserve players produced another positive display ahead of the competitive campaign.

Attention now turns to Clay Cross as Wednesday look to carry that momentum into their first competitive test of the new season and take the first step on their 2026/27 FA Cup journey.
