Barnsley, known for their high-scoring form this season, started the game on the front foot and looked to impose themselves early. However, Wednesday’s well-organised shape and disciplined pressing kept the visitors at bay for much of the first half. Chances were limited for the home side, with Wednesday largely restricted to a handful of counter-attacks that were dealt with comfortably by Barnsley’s solid back three.
The breakthrough finally arrived after 35 minutes. A long clearance from the Barnsley defence caught Wednesday momentarily off guard, allowing the Barnsley striker to race through one-on-one and finish calmly to give the visitors a 1–0 lead at the break.
Wednesday emerged for the second half with renewed energy after making a couple of changes and adjusting their formation. The hosts began to look more threatening going forward, with Barrett twice troubling the Barnsley defence and Barnes causing problems down the right with her pace. The increased attacking intent lifted Wednesday’s belief that they could take something from the game.
Despite Wednesday’s improvement, Barnsley continued to dominate possession and create chances. The Wednesday back three of Norcliffe, Young and Davies produced a determined defensive display, repeatedly throwing bodies in the way of goal-bound efforts. Goalkeeper Kirsty Johnson also played a key role, producing several excellent saves to keep her side in the contest.
Wednesday felt they had a case for stronger action when Davies appeared to be the target of a punch during a heated moment, though the incident went unpunished by the referee.
The game remained frantic until the final whistle, with both sides pushing hard, but Barnsley ultimately held on for a narrow victory — a result that, on balance, their overall control of the game probably deserved.
Nevertheless, Wednesday produced a spirited team performance full of hard work and determination in what proved to be an excellent advert for local grassroots football.
Wednesday Reserves now turn their attention to next Sunday, when they welcome a strong Staveley side to the Jubilee.
